Zenbuttons Class

On April 27, 2018, I met with 12 students at the Miners Cafe in Laurium to bring them through the fun process of creating a Zenbutton. This technique was originated by CZT Marguerite Samama, using Reticula and Fragments as described by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in their book, Zentangle® Primer Vol. 1.

Making a Zenbutton is an easy process, and it almost feels like magic when the 3-D effect is created in the final steps.

See below how nicely the students’ buttons turned out!

Thanks to Pam at the Miners Cafe for hosting this fun class.

Below is a blue Zenbutton I made on gray paper. Making these can be addicting!

Thanks for reading and happy tangling!

Catching up with classes: 2/3/18 – Tints on Tan Snowflakes

After taking a break over the holiday months, I resumed teaching Zentangle classes at the Miners Cafe in Laurium. For my first class for the new year, I again taught a “Tints on Tan” class, a method developed by Marty Deckel, CZT in collaboration with Jenny Perruzzi, CZT. This technique uses layers of colored pencil tints to create a lovely nuanced tinted and tangled masterpiece.

See below for the beautiful creations of the artists below:

If you look closely, you can see the bits of sparkle that was added to create even drama to the snowflakes.

Thanks to the students for a fun class and to Miners Cafe for the venue.

Fun with PanPastels

I recently ordered a set of PanPastels and had a chance to play with them.If you don’t know what they are, here is a site that explains. I enjoyed experimenting with them on this blank Zendala tile, and then tangling with a 02 Micron pen. I used a larger tip pen to prevent the fine colored power from clogging the nib. The colors are very subtle, and difficult to see in the picture – they are somewhat brighter in real life. Tangles used: Flux, Alice (from a “Tangle Speak” Deck Vol 1. (Found here), and Jacki (by Sandy Steen Bartholomew).

It was fun using these gentle colors, and I think they will find their way in more of my tangle creations in the future.

Thanks for stopping by.

I taught this Zentangle Inspired Art Class at Keweenaw Gem & Gift on Saturday, June 11th. This method of using shells as strings, tangling,  light tinting with colored pencils, and adding highlights and shadows was developed by Marty Deckel, CZT in collaboration with Jenny Perruzzi, CZT. Visit the Tints on Tan™ etsy site for access to some of the kits that are available. Please also visit Jenny’s site for more tangle goodies.

We had a great time playing with the shell shapes, tangles, and colored pencils to make these beautiful tinted tiles. A variety of tangles were used including: Printemps, Finery, Tipple, Antidot, and Flux.

They all look great! Each a little different, with the artist’s own flare.

Thanks to all the students who participated and to Keweenaw Gem & Gift for the wonderful space for class.

Better late than never! To finish up the calendar, I added: Netting, Schmoozy, Pomegranate, Pillows, Planateen, Postl, Rosewood, Offerings, Springkle, and Westminster. I filled in some of the non-dated spaces with just playing around. The tangle Springkle is an official Zentangle pattern, and is currently only taught by CZT’s. Please let me know if you are interested in taking a class.

In addition to new tangles I see posted, I started going through the patterns at the Tangle Patterns site alphabetically, and adding tangles from there. This week I added: Garland, Archer, Basketweave, Blooming-butter, Bwiya, and Brayd.

Be sure to visit Tanglepatterns.com yourself to see the great selection there.
