Miner’s Cafe Zentangle® Black Tile Class

29 Monday May 2017

Six creative Zentangle students and I had a wonderful time playing with white ink on black paper tiles. Tangling with these materials invites a different mind frame, with an emphasis on highlights and brightness. Using a Gelly Roll pen also works better with a slow hand and a light touch. I think that all the participants did a great job!

A Montangle (one tangle) above using Arukas. These remind me of some sort of lovely celestial object!

Thanks to all for joining me and to the host, Pam, for the wonderful space for art-making.

The next Zentangle Class at the Miner’s Cafe is Renaissance (Tan) Tiles on June 13th at 6 pm. See this blog from a previous class for more information about Renaissance Zentangle.

Since this approach requires a little bit of prior knowledge about the process, I am asking that students have prior experience with Zentangle. In addition, I would ask that you bring your own black micron pen (01) and pencil.

For $35, you will receive a mini-kit which contains a brown micron pen, a white gelly roll pen,  a mini white charcoal pencil, a paper blender, and 5 tan tiles. If you choose to bring all of your own writing instruments (brown and black micron pens, white charcoal and graphite pencils, and a white gelly roll pen), the cost will be $30. I will provide the tan tiles. Additional supplies will be available for purchase.

The Miner’s Cafe is located at 63 1st Street in Laurium. It’s on the street that ends at the Calumet High School stoplight. To register, call Pam at 337-2274.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Since the closing of Your Crazy Place, I have not had a place to teach classes. I am happy to say that due to the generosity of Cindy and Ken Flood, I have a lovely room in the new location of Keweenaw Gem & Gift shop in Houghton. The classroom is very bright and cheerful and I am grateful to have an opportunity to use it.

This past Saturday, March 12th, I met with 6 Zentangle students for an introductory class in this wonderful new space. Here is the mosaic of their first tile:

Tangles used: Crescent Moon, Jetties (and variations), Emingle, Hibred

For the second tile, we worked with Ing and Molygon. We didn’t quite finish that one, but here’s a picture of my tile that I finished later:

Thanks to the students who participated in the class. I had a wonderful time and after teaching,  I am always inspired and re-energized for my own Zentangle practice.

And thanks again to Keweenaw Gem & Gift for the wonderful location! If you haven’t visited there, please stop by to see their wonderful selection of native ore, jewelry, and other one-of-a kind gifts.

Three students joined me to learn the basics of the Zentangle method on June 27, 2015 at Your Crazy Place in Houghton. We had a lovely time enjoying the relaxing but deliberate process of putting pen to paper. Below are the tiles that were created.

April Zendala Class at Your Crazy Place

I had the pleasure of sharing the process of creating Zendalas with four creative and enthusiastic students at Your Crazy Place shop in Houghton. A Zendala is the combination of a mandala with Zentangle.

For the first Zendala we completed, we drew our own outline string on a blank Zendala tile using common household items (e.g. bottle caps and jar lids) to trace the circles. I love how they are each unique and each beautiful.2015-04-25 12.16.05

For the next Zendala, we used one with the guiding string already on the circular tile. These pre-strung Zendala tiles, made by Zentangle, are available with several different patterns of strings. These tiles are fun to use, as the string-making step is already done and you can jump right into the tangling.

Below is the picture of the start that the students made using the pre-strung tiles.

They have a great beginning to these lovely Zendalas.

Thanks to the students for an enjoyable and pleasant teaching experience.

On Saturday, March 21, I was fortunate to be able to share my love of Zentangle with four more new students.

2015-03-21 13.02.16

Our first tile: Tangles used: Crescent Moon, Flux, Bales, and Msst.

They all commented on the fact that although they all learned the same tangles, their finished tiles were each unique!

Tangles used: Flukes, Printemps, Nzepple, Shattuck.

I really enjoyed introducing these four lovely women to  Zentangle. I also find my enthusiasm for tangling renewed by sharing it with others! Thanks, Ladies!

Fun with Color Zentangle Class

01 Sunday Mar 2015

On February 21st, 2015 I shared some Zentangle Color play with four ladies at Your Crazy Place in Houghton. Having no formal art education, I felt a little nervous venturing into the world of color. So, in preparation for this class, I reviewed some basic color theory on the internet. I shared this information with the class and we talked about the color wheel, complementary colors, and some ideas for choosing colors. I recommended this website (design seeds) for color combination ideas.

We used the official Zentangle tiles for all of our color play. We made watercolor backgrounds using an inexpensive set of watercolors. We taped the tiles down to prevent curling and set them aside to dry. Then we tangled on them using a Sakura Pigma 05 pen, which has a harder nip and doesn’t clog as easily as the regular micron pens we typically use for tangling.

I love the colors they chose!

We also played with watercolor pencils. With this technique, first you tangle on a tile, then you color with the pencils, and then use a water brush to blend the colors.

2015-02-21 12.56.37

There is also a watercolor background tile in this picture.

Some of the tangles used : Gneiss, Huggins, Vitruvius.

I appreciate the openness and sense of play that the students brought to the class. I think we all learned something.

Four students joined me for an introduction, or for some, a re-introduction to the Zentangle process of making art. We had a wonderful time playing with tangles and relaxing at the very comfortable studio space of Your Crazy Place in downtown Houghton.

Below are their tile mosaics:

I am the Diva Challenge #200!

Congratulations to Laura of “I am the Diva” for her 200th weekly Zentangle challenge. She is having a “Bi-Zen-Tennial” Celebration with a giveaway, so head over to her blog to check it out!

Her challenge is to use your “mac and cheese,” “comfort,” or “go-to” tangle, covering the whole tile, and add the number “200” somewhere.

My favorite tangle is Bales. I love the rhythm of drawing it and the pretty little flowers.

I feel very “Zen-ful” after this tile. 🙂

Thanks for visiting.

Zentangle Renaissance Tile Class at Your Crazy Place

Saturday, September 27 I taught another class at Your Crazy Place. We explored beautiful tan Zentangle tiles, using regular black Micron pens, but also a luscious brown colored pen and white Gelly Roll pen. We also played with shading with a regular pencil and with a white charcoal pencil.

Two junior high school young ladies were part of the class, and it was wonderful to see their creative interpretations. We all enjoyed the discovery of playing with multiple color pens using the Zentangle method.

The girls left early to go horseback riding (lucky girls!) so they did not fully finish their second tile.

Thanks for joining me in the fun today, ladies!
