Tan Tile Class at Miner’s Cafe

15 Saturday Jul 2017

In June, 4 students and I explored a little more advanced Zentangle experience: Renaissance Tiles. On these tan tiles, black, white and brown ink is used, along with white charcoal highlighting and graphite pencil shading. It’s somewhat more complicated than the traditional black ink/white tile or white ink/black tile combinations. There are many more choices to make about what ink color to use. However, it’s hard to go wrong (and as you know, with Zentangle there are no mistakes) and the combination of these colors are beautiful.

See below for the first tiles the students and I completed.

Tangles used: Zander, Flux, Shattuck, Tripoli, Noom.

We then challenged ourselves even further by doing a tile with just one tangle, but this tangle required a little bit more focus: Huggins. As you can see below, this tangle has a woven look.

We made the Huggins tangle large, to allow for more tangles to be added inside.

Thanks to the students for a wonderful class exploring the many options of Renaissance Tiles!

Miner’s Cafe Zentangle® Black Tile Class

Six creative Zentangle students and I had a wonderful time playing with white ink on black paper tiles. Tangling with these materials invites a different mind frame, with an emphasis on highlights and brightness. Using a Gelly Roll pen also works better with a slow hand and a light touch. I think that all the participants did a great job!

Tangles above: Onamato, Flux, Puf (with optional Tipple).

A Montangle (one tangle) above using Arukas. These remind me of some sort of lovely celestial object!

Thanks to all for joining me and to the host, Pam, for the wonderful space for art-making.

The next Zentangle Class at the Miner’s Cafe is Renaissance (Tan) Tiles on June 13th at 6 pm. See this blog from a previous class for more information about Renaissance Zentangle.

Since this approach requires a little bit of prior knowledge about the process, I am asking that students have prior experience with Zentangle. In addition, I would ask that you bring your own black micron pen (01) and pencil.

For $35, you will receive a mini-kit which contains a brown micron pen, a white gelly roll pen,  a mini white charcoal pencil, a paper blender, and 5 tan tiles. If you choose to bring all of your own writing instruments (brown and black micron pens, white charcoal and graphite pencils, and a white gelly roll pen), the cost will be $30. I will provide the tan tiles. Additional supplies will be available for purchase.

The Miner’s Cafe is located at 63 1st Street in Laurium. It’s on the street that ends at the Calumet High School stoplight. To register, call Pam at 337-2274.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

We had our first class at a new location, The Miner’s Cafe in Laurium. The venue worked well, very spacious and bright. Our hostess, Pam (co-owner of the Cafe) also joined us for the class and provided snack and beverages at break time (Thanks, Pam!)

The students did a great job and enjoyed getting into the relaxed flow of Zentangle. Below are the mosaics of their lovely tiles:

3:00 – 5:30 pm

IMG_20170409_163203154

Since I have a new venue for classes, I like to start with an Introductory class. I am excited to have an opportunity to offer classes in the northern part of Houghton County. The new location is The Miner’s Cafe (formerly Nina’s Restaurant) in Laurium. They offer a variety of art classes “after hours” when the cafe is typically closed.

This class will cover the basics of the Zentangle method and students will be provided with a mini-kit to keep which contains all the supplies necessary to continue practice at home. The class is designed for those who have never taken a Zentangle class from a Certified Teacher or for those who wish a review/refresher/revitalizer of their practice.

For more information about Zentangle, see Zentangle.com

The Miner’s Cafe is located at 63 1st Street in Laurium. Turn on School Street at the stoplight at Calumet High School, and it’s about 4 blocks down on the right side of the street. To register, call Pam at 337-2274. The cost is $35.

Please check out The Miner’s Cafe Facebook page for more art events.

I had the pleasure of sharing the use of Zentangle as a mindfulness practice with four students yesterday. We met at a lovely space at the Holistic Center for Mind, Body, and Spirit in Chassell.

After exploring the origins of Zentangle,  the benefits of mindfulness, and how the two can work together, we did a short exercise to help ground and focus our thoughts. Here is a link to the Three Minute Breathing Space practice similar to the one we did.

These are the two Zentangle tiles that the students completed.

Tangles used: Crescent Moon, Antidot, Hollibaugh, Shattuck

Tangles used: Bunzo, Taugh, Bales

The students were very focused during the class and it certainly shows in the beauty of these tiles!

Thanks to the students for joining me and to the Holistic Center for Mind, Body, and Spirit for hosting the class and providing us with delicious snacks. Please visit the Center’s Facebook page for more information about other classes offered there.

I hope to be teaching there again soon!

I’ll be teaching a new introductory class, focusing on using Zentangle to practice mindfulness. Emphasis will be on on enjoying the process of creating, being present in the moment, and letting go of expected outcomes. We will go through the steps of the Zentangle process, using the 3.5″ paper tiles, pens, and pencils to create patterns that form beautiful compositions.

Saturday, December 3, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
$35, includes mini Zentangle kit to keep

The location of the class is Holistic Center for Mind, Body & Spirit, 42051 Wilson Memorial Drive, Chassell, MI

Fun with PanPastels

I recently ordered a set of PanPastels and had a chance to play with them.If you don’t know what they are, here is a site that explains. I enjoyed experimenting with them on this blank Zendala tile, and then tangling with a 02 Micron pen. I used a larger tip pen to prevent the fine colored power from clogging the nib. The colors are very subtle, and difficult to see in the picture – they are somewhat brighter in real life. Tangles used: Flux, Alice (from a “Tangle Speak” Deck Vol 1. (Found here), and Jacki (by Sandy Steen Bartholomew).

It was fun using these gentle colors, and I think they will find their way in more of my tangle creations in the future.

Thanks for stopping by.

I taught this Zentangle Inspired Art Class at Keweenaw Gem & Gift on Saturday, June 11th. This method of using shells as strings, tangling,  light tinting with colored pencils, and adding highlights and shadows was developed by Marty Deckel, CZT in collaboration with Jenny Perruzzi, CZT. Visit the Tints on Tan™ etsy site for access to some of the kits that are available. Please also visit Jenny’s site for more tangle goodies.

We had a great time playing with the shell shapes, tangles, and colored pencils to make these beautiful tinted tiles. A variety of tangles were used including: Printemps, Finery, Tipple, Antidot, and Flux.

They all look great! Each a little different, with the artist’s own flare.

Thanks to all the students who participated and to Keweenaw Gem & Gift for the wonderful space for class.

Since the closing of Your Crazy Place, I have not had a place to teach classes. I am happy to say that due to the generosity of Cindy and Ken Flood, I have a lovely room in the new location of Keweenaw Gem & Gift shop in Houghton. The classroom is very bright and cheerful and I am grateful to have an opportunity to use it.

This past Saturday, March 12th, I met with 6 Zentangle students for an introductory class in this wonderful new space. Here is the mosaic of their first tile:

Tangles used: Crescent Moon, Jetties (and variations), Emingle, Hibred

For the second tile, we worked with Ing and Molygon. We didn’t quite finish that one, but here’s a picture of my tile that I finished later:

Tangles used: Ing, Molygon, Flux

Thanks to the students who participated in the class. I had a wonderful time and after teaching,  I am always inspired and re-energized for my own Zentangle practice.

And thanks again to Keweenaw Gem & Gift for the wonderful location! If you haven’t visited there, please stop by to see their wonderful selection of native ore, jewelry, and other one-of-a kind gifts.
